November 24, 1950

The «Storm of the Century», a violent snowstorm, paralyzes the northeastern United States and the Appalachians, bringing winds up to 100 mph and sub-zero temperatures. The Great Appalachian Storm of November 1950 was a large extratropical cyclone which moved through the Eastern United States, causing significant winds, heavy rains east of the Appalachians, and blizzard conditions along the western slopes of the mountain chain. Power was out to more than 1,000,000 customers during this event. In all, the storm impacted 22 states, killing 353, and creating US$66.7 million in damage (1950 dollars). At the time, U.S. insurance companies paid more money out to their policy holders for damage resulting from this cyclone than for any other previous storm or hurricane.

January 6, 1839

The most damaging storm in 300 years sweeps across Ireland, damaging or destroying more than 20% of the houses in Dublin. The Night of the Big Wind was a severe European windstorm which swept without warning across Ireland on the night of January 6 - January 7, 1839, causing severe damage to property and several hundred deaths; 20% to 25% of houses in north Dublin were damaged or destroyed, and 42 ships were wrecked. The storm attained a very low barometric pressure of 918 hectopascals (27.1 inHg) and tracked eastwards to the north of Ireland, bringing winds gusts of over 100 knots (185 km/h, 115 mph) to the south of the island. At the time, it was the most damaging Irish storm for 300 years.

January 25, 1990

The Burns' Day storm hits northwestern Europe. The Burns' Day Storm occurred on 25–26 January, 1990, over north-western Europe, and is one of the strongest storms on record. This storm has received different names as there is no official list of such events in Europe. It is also known as Daria. Starting on the birthday of Scottish poet Robert Burns, it caused widespread damage and hurricane-force winds over a wide area. The storm was responsible for 97 deaths (according to the Met Office), although figures have ranged from 89 to over 100.

April 14, 1935

"Black Sunday Storm", the worst dust storm of the U.S. Dust Bowl. Black Sunday was a particularly serious dust storm, or black blizzard, that took place during the Dust Bowl era on April 14, 1935. The storm began in the mid afternoon, presaged by thousands of birds fleeing before the rolling clouds of dirt. A long drought during the first half of the 1930s, combined with a lack of knowledge of conservation techniques, caused excessive topsoil erosion on farmlands in the Midwest. Disastrous dust storms like these forced many farmers to leave their homes to start a new life elsewhere, they went to many places especially California. The storm itself was created by a combination of dry topsoil and high (60 mph (97 km/h)) winds. The Black Sunday storm was the worst dust storm in the Great Plains during the 1930s. It is estimated to have removed 300,000 tons of topsoil from the area known afterwards as the Dust Bowl. The storm of black dust resulted from prolonged drought and overplowing in the Great Plains, which destroyed the sod and left topsoil exposed.
